Narrative Elements
Setting:
The setting of the Simpsons version of hamlet is based in the same place, it is based in Denmark, in the royal court. However, many features of the text have been changed to suit the comedy. for example, the people during the time speak modern English, with slight references to early modern English for the purposes of humor only. Also, the story is based on homer, living in Springfield, reading a text to his children, and they themselves are the characters within hamlet. also, Hamlets rooms is has posters making satirical comments such as "feudalism" being posted on his wall.
Characters
Bart Hamlet: the Bart version of Hamlet is not as serious as the original Hamlet. He is pretty calm seeing as his fathers ghost approached him, and he isn't particularly worried or stressed about the fact that Claudius is his fathers murderer. He is laid back, and no where near as complex as the Hamlet in the original text. This adds to the humor of the text. In addition, Hamlet is not driven mad at all by the experiences he goes through. He is simple minded and straightforward.
Plot: The plot in both texts are very similar, however, the Simpsons version is brief and less complex. The Simpsons are sitting down reading about old stories from previous times, when homer begins reading the story of Hamlet,. The story begins differently to the original Hamlet, and gets straight it the point,. Hamlets fathers ghost appears to him while he is sleeping, and at no certain apparent time, as opposed to the Actual story, in which he appears at dawn outside the castle. Hamlet does not even plot to avenge his father, in fact, it happens spontaneously.
Conflict:
The conflict in the text is very similar with almost no change. Hamlet must figure out who the murderer of his father is, and avenge his death. The events however unravel very quickly, and a large number of scenes and characters are removed. This includes Ham lets internal conflict of madness, which is completely overlooked, save one reference where the people think he is mad. In addition, the betrayal of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern is not in the text, in fact, the characters do not appear except in the final scene, in which they are apparently covered in poison, and die when they high five each other.
Resolution:
The basic idea of the ending is also quote similar, however, once again very simple and not straight forward. The characters do end up dying, but it has nothing to do with a mastermind plan. Hamlet figures out who the killer is, goes to Claudius to kill him. Laertes gets one practice shot, and stabs himself (lol). Claudius is killed by Hamlet, Hamlet slips on blood and dies. And Hamlets mother hits herself in the head with a mace and dies. Whereas in the original text, it was complicated, people took the wrong poison swords were swapped etc.
